About Me

018

I’m Sara, and I am a blessed child of God, wife to strong and hardworking Captain, and mommy to future engineer and always logical Tater Girl, age 7, and Junior, our precious 3 year old son who was born profoundly deaf, and has some additional delays. I am also a contributing writer to The Mighty.

My struggles with Junior’s diagnosis have taught me more about living joyfully than I could have ever imagined. Although, I’ll admit there are good days and bad days, and ups and downs and some days when I just collapse onto the couch with a whole bunch of chocolate.

I have a degree in history and pass off my love of useless trivia fascinating tidbits of information by homeschooling Tater. We like to do lots of hands on projects, field trips, and reading.

I try to cook healthy meals on a budget, and love sharing my favorite recipes. Come join me on this journey of joyful living, special needs, homeschooling, and life.

  2. Hi Sara,
I found your article very interesting and my heart goes out to you. I am a Teacher of the Deaf and work with families like yours everyday, all of them deal with diagnosis differently. I would really like to know your thoughts on what words might have been helpful at the time? I worry a lot about what the right approach is!

    1. Hi Alice!
Thank you so much for your comment. As you mentioned, everyone deals with it differently, but the most helpful comments were questions…things like “how are you doing?”, “is there anything I can do to help?”…those sorts of things. And of course, offering a hug and thoughts or prayers was always kind as well. Since you have a background in working with deaf families, sharing your personal experiences with success stories of deaf children would have been very helpful!
